Winter is just around the corner, bringing with it the inevitable arrival of snow and ice!
As a reminder, it is illegal to store personal property such as boats, trailers, etc. in the City Right-of-Way and these items are subject to towing / impoundment. For questions regarding city right-of-way or designated snow dumps please contact the acting Streets Superintendent at (907)253-6231.

Please remember that per city code it is the responsibility of property owners, tenants, and business owners to keep the public sidewalks adjacent to your property clear of snow and ice. Failure to do so may result in penalties (refer to city code on the City of Cordova website; CMC 13.08.060).

Please practice snowplow safety – this is especially important for our kids! Be aware of your surroundings and don’t always assume the plow driver can see you. Stay far away from the road when standing or playing outside. Plow trucks are big, with blind spots, and a driver may not see you if you are standing too close to the road. Plows can also throw large chunks of ice and snow as they pass and the flying debris could hurt you. Never tunnel or build forts in the snowbanks or snow dumps along the side of the road. Wear bright colors and reflective tape so that our drivers can see you better.

The City of Cordova Water Department advises Cordovans to prevent pipes from freezing up by keeping just one faucet in the house continuously running water at a rate just above a trickle (about the width of a pencil lead). In addition, don’t shut off the water just because it warms up for a few days – this will actually freeze your pipes at a faster rate.
