Next Wednesday, May 19th, City Council will consider repealing the City’s mask mandate and relaxing its COVID-19 Emergency Rules in light of Cordova’s high vaccination rate and availability, and new CDC guidelines. Dr. Sanders states, “I am pleased to see the evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine is effective at both preventing morbidity from and transmission of COVID-19. I want to encourage healthy vaccinated individuals to feel comfortable returning to normal activity without masks and without social distance. The Cordova medical community has vaccine available for anyone over 12 years old who would like to be immunized.” Individual businesses may still choose to require masks.
At the same meeting Council will also consider extending the City’s declaration of a local emergency. Cordova is on its way toward recovery but Council action will ensure that the City retains the authority to adopt rules and policies to continue to mitigate COVID-19 as well as qualify for state and federal funding related to COVID-19. The City is committed to ensuring that normal business operations are able to safely resume as soon as possible.
