Cordova receives grant for boat haul-out facility from Denali Commission

The City of Cordova has been awarded a grant from the Denali Commission to complete all design, permitting and bid documents for the proposed boat haul out facility.  The City’s contracted engineers for this project, PND, Inc., are proceeding with the design work as recommended by the Cordova City Council.  This design work will be based directly on findings from the 2004 Cordova Travel Lift Feasibility Study, prepared by Northern Economics, Inc.  The design will include all necessary facilities to operate a 150 ton marine travel lift.  Facilities in the design will include a 120’x 42’ pier, a 120’x50’ washdown/workpad, related utilities, and possible restroom facilities (keep in mind that these proposed facilities are preliminary only and may change or be refined as the design process continues).   Based on evaluation of all criteria in the feasibility study, the Ocean Dock site is the preferred location for the travel lift pier and vessel repair/storage yard.

Once preliminary design drawings have been prepared a public hearing will be scheduled to allow input from all concerned.  That input will be considered and used to complete final construction design plans and documents.

Please bear in mind that this award is for design purposes only.  Once the design phase has been completed, the City of Cordova will pursue additional funds for construction of this facility.

If you have any questions, concerns or ideas regarding the design of this facility, please do not hesitate to contact me.  If anyone would like to see the 2004 Travel Lift Feasibility Study, I can provide a copy to you and point out the selected construction option the City Council recommended.
