We are sorry to report that Mike O'Leary died in an avalanche in Cordova on Saturday, March 8, 2008. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Monday, June 2nd, 2008 Good morning, The CRH avalanche season is now over. Snow still exists in the start zones above 5.5 mile but appears to be well consolidated and is expected to melt in place. With no snow in the runout, any avalanche that might occur would not be able to reach the highway. As for backcountry users, the avalanche season is not over until all the snow is gone. For the most part, the hazard will remain low. When the sun comes out, expect small, wet, loose snow avalanches on steep, sunny slopes. If significant rain falls, expect large deep slab avalanches on steep, loaded, western slopes. Avoid cornices and glide cracks. Thank you all for your help and support. I look forward to continuing this again next season. Hoots COPPER RIVER HIGHWAY Current Avalanche Hazard: NONE Hazard Outlook: The CRH avalanche season is over
Below Tree Line: LOW Avoid terrain traps below steep, open slopes. Tree Line: MODERATE Avoid glide cracks and steep, convex slopes. Above Tree Line: MODERATE becoming CONSIDERABLE with significant precipitation. Avoid cornices, glide cracks, and steep, convex slopes. Current avalanche activity is an important factor in avalanche forecasting. Please report all observed avalanche activity. For Alaska Department of Transportation use only.
